SOC & Monitoring

Do You Need a SOC, or Just Someone Watching the Logs?

18 August 2026 6 min read

Attackers like nights, weekends, and public holidays, because that is when no one is watching. That is the argument for a Security Operations Centre — a team and toolset that watches your systems around the clock. But a full in-house SOC is a serious investment, and plenty of businesses reach for one when a lighter option would serve them better. The right question is not "do we want a SOC" but "how much monitoring does our risk actually justify?"

What a SOC is really for

A SOC exists to shorten one number: the time between an attacker getting in and someone noticing. Breaches that run undetected for weeks are what turn a contained incident into a catastrophe. Continuous monitoring, alerting, and a team ready to respond is how that window shrinks from weeks to minutes.

The honest tiers

  • Basic logging and alerts. The minimum: your key systems record what happens and flag obvious trouble. Fine for a small, low-risk business — provided someone genuinely reviews the alerts rather than letting them pile up unread.
  • Managed detection and response (MDR). An outside team watches your systems for you, around the clock, and tells you when something is wrong — often catching and containing it before you would have known to look. For most small and mid-sized organisations this is the sweet spot: 24/7 coverage without building the team yourself.
  • Your own SOC. A dedicated in-house team makes sense at real scale, or where regulation or the sensitivity of your data demands direct control. It is a significant, ongoing commitment in people and tooling.

How to place yourself

Weigh three things: how much damage a breach would do to you, how much of your business runs on systems that would be attractive to attack, and what your customers or regulators require. A clinic holding patient records and a two-person design studio are not on the same tier, and pretending otherwise wastes money at one end and courts disaster at the other.

The trap to avoid is buying monitoring nobody watches — alerts flowing into an inbox no one reads protect no one. Whichever tier fits, the value is in the response, not the dashboard. If you are not sure where you sit, we would rather talk you into the right-sized option than the biggest one; tell us what you are protecting and we will be straight with you.
